Children’s Book Gift Guide

Each day is different as a parent, but there is one thing that remains constant… My love of books!!

It started before my eldest was born when I saw a fun idea to replace baby shower cards with books.

6 years later and we have some well loved books, filled with notes and signatures from the people who love us the most. It truly is something I cherish, and those little notes have become something that my children look forward to reading along with the book itself!

Reading is such an integral part of your child’s life. And it is something that I, as a Sleep Consultant, suggest with every family that I work with. Not only does it help their development, but it’s also a wonderful opportunity to cuddle together and help them wind down for sleep.

And now with the holidays approaching our children are about to be inundated with toys, which can be great! But when the initial excitement wears off they can become these lovely dust collectors in the corner of the room. So I have been moving towards books a lot more than toys for not only my children, but for gifts as well!

And this doesn't only apply to Christmas. I love books for any occasion: baby showers, birthdays, and even fun little holiday themed books for mini celebrations at Valentine’s Day, Easter, Halloween, etc.

Now before I share my favourites with you, here are a couple book tips I want to pass along to you:

Anytime you get or give a book as a gift, sign the inside cover with a little personalized message and your signature. Some of our books have signatures of family members who are no longer with us and I will cherish them forever. This also goes for adults. Are you gifting a cookbook? Leave a note that will make them smile each time they open the cover.

And one of the best things I have done to keep books interesting is swapping them out. Each child has a book ledge that they can reach in their room, and I keep a variety of books accessible to them there. The remainder get tucked away in the closet and I swap them out periodically throughout the year. I also pack away our holiday themed books and only bring them out for the holiday themselves (thanks for that tip Jillian Harris..)

Now onto the books!

*for anybody local to Slave Lake I have noted which books are available at Grateful Heart, along with many others not named here!

Favourites, As Chosen By You

I’m not sure if you noticed a theme with my family’s favourites. My son almost obsessively loved anything dinosaur related when he was a toddler… he still does but it’s like normal enjoyment levels now haha. Now that he is 6 he has moved onto anything poop related (boy moms can relate…) and I Spy books! As for my 2 year old daughter, she will pick out the touch and feel books every single time. We have them for every occasion, every animal, and they are always her top pick.

If your family has an additional favourites please leave them in the comments below!
